A controversial garden Pilates studio in a Norfolk village has been given the green light to continue operating for another year, following a heated local dispute and a council review.
Retrospective Approval Granted
West Norfolk Council's planning committee has unanimously approved a retrospective change of use for a building on Manor Road in North Wootton. The structure, originally a swimming pool hut at a property named Linnymead, can now officially function as a reformer Pilates studio for a 12-month period.
The decision, made on January 14, 2026, follows a bitter row that erupted after the studio, named Luco Wellness, opened its doors on November 3 without the necessary planning consent. The business is run by 24-year-old Megan Smith from her grandparents' £825,000 property.
Local Concerns and Council Praise
Some villagers had strongly objected to the venture, voicing fears that noise from sessions and increased customer traffic could disrupt local church services and Remembrance parades. Concerns were also raised about parking for the nearly 50 clients who visited in the studio's first week.
However, during a site visit, Councillor Richard Coates reported he could not hear any noise from the studio 'at all'. The committee ultimately praised Ms Smith for bringing 'something different to West Norfolk' and for spotting a gap in the market for reformer Pilates classes.
'I applaud this young lady for bringing forward a business in the current climate,' said Councillor Sue Lintern during the meeting. Deputy leader Cllr Simon Ring added his hope that neighbours would support what he called an 'excellent business'.
Conditions and Future Review
The permission is temporary and conditional. The council will review the operation again in 2027 to assess whether the arrangements for parking and access are working satisfactorily.
To manage impact, five customer parking spaces have been allocated and a one-way system for accessing the studio, located at the rear of the property, has been implemented. The site also features an on-site cafe, Luco Nourish, offering organic drinks and açai bowls.
Ms Smith, who named her business after her dogs Lulu and Coco, stated that her £30,000 studio can assist with rehabilitation, improving flexibility, and achieving a leaner physique.
