Human Appeal, a leading global humanitarian charity, has launched a series of large-scale Grand Iftar events this Ramadan, distributing a total of 250,302 meals to vulnerable individuals across seven countries grappling with conflict, displacement, and poverty. The initiative targets Palestine, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, providing not only sustenance but also safe communal spaces for families to break their fast together with dignity.
Current Operations and Impact
The Grand Iftars are actively underway in Gaza and Syria, with events already completed in Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. In Sudan alone, seven events have reached nearly 31,000 beneficiaries, while in Gaza, over 12,000 internally displaced people are participating in a major communal Iftar. These efforts address critical food insecurity exacerbated by ongoing conflicts, economic instability, and disrupted supply chains, which have left many families unable to afford or prepare basic meals.
Targeting the Most Vulnerable
Priority is given to women-headed households, children, elderly individuals, and people with disabilities, particularly in overcrowded displacement sites where access to food, fuel, clean water, and electricity is severely limited. The events include site preparation, organised seating, cultural elements reflective of Ramadan traditions, and structured crowd management to ensure safety and inclusivity.
Beyond Immediate Hunger Relief
Mohamed Chahtane, Human Appeal's head of global supply chain, emphasised the broader mission: "Ramadan is a time of reflection, generosity and unity. For families enduring displacement and hardship, being able to break their fast together in safety and dignity is profoundly meaningful. These Grand Iftars are about more than feeding mouths - they are about restoring hope, connection and a sense of community." The charity aims to provide emotional relief and strengthen community bonds through these gatherings.
Coordination and Quality Assurance
All meals are delivered in coordination with Human Appeal's local partners and existing hot meals programmes, ensuring accountability, quality control, and effective monitoring, evaluation, and learning mechanisms. This structured approach helps scale the Ramadan response globally to meet rising humanitarian needs and prevent vulnerable families from being overlooked during the holy month.
