Haringey Council Unveils £900,000 Gym Overhaul at Two North London Leisure Centres

New images have revealed the initial stages of a significant £900,000 refurbishment project at two key leisure centres in North London. Haringey Council is spearheading this investment to upgrade gym facilities at both Park Road and Tottenham Green leisure centres, following the council's decision to bring management of these sites back in-house from external contractors in October 2024.

Expansion and Enhanced Accessibility Features

The renovation plans include a substantial expansion of both gyms, with the total number of workout stations set to increase by an impressive 40 per cent. Residents of the borough will benefit from a range of new equipment, freshly redecorated interiors, and specifically designed new spaces that cater to wheelchair users and individuals with disabilities.

Haringey's cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Emily Arkell, expressed enthusiasm about the project: "I'm delighted to see that our residents will soon be able to benefit from these gym improvements and upgrades, and it's especially pleasing that we're making our equipment more accessible and inclusive."

"Having inherited a backlog of maintenance issues and repair works when we brought this provision back in-house in October 2024, we're continuing on our improvement journey to enhance the user experience and service for our residents," Arkell continued. "These improvement projects serve to further underline our commitment to ensure our leisure centre equipment is clean, safe and well-maintained for them to use."

Project Timeline and Temporary Arrangements

Each gym renovation is scheduled to last approximately four weeks. The refurbishment at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre commenced on Monday, February 23, while work at Park Road Leisure Centre began on Monday, March 16. The installation of a new functional gym at Park Road will require four weeks to complete.

During the improvement works, temporary gym facilities will be available at both sites, and other amenities such as fitness classes and swimming pools will remain operational without interruption. Additionally, members can utilize gym facilities at either Broadwater Farm Community Centre or New River Leisure Centre at no extra cost throughout the duration of these renovations.

The main gym at Park Road Leisure Centre will be temporarily closed on Thursday, March 12 to facilitate the relocation of existing equipment. This strategic closure ensures minimal disruption while allowing for efficient implementation of the upgrade plans.

Background and Council Commitment

Haringey Council assumed direct management of both Park Road and Tottenham Green leisure centres in October 2024, marking a significant shift from previous external contractor arrangements. This move has enabled the council to address accumulated maintenance issues and implement comprehensive improvement strategies that prioritize resident needs and accessibility standards.

The current £900,000 investment represents a continuation of the council's commitment to enhancing community leisure facilities, with particular emphasis on creating inclusive environments that serve all residents effectively. The project is expected to be fully completed by mid-April, delivering modernized gym spaces that meet contemporary fitness standards while addressing specific accessibility requirements.
