Sonny Allen Makes History for Highgate Harriers at National Cross-Country Championships
Highgate Harriers athlete Sonny Allen has raced into the history books after securing a stunning victory at the National Cross-Country Championships in Sedgefield. The 15-year-old from Westminster delivered a performance for the ages on Saturday, becoming the club's first national champion in over a century.
A Historic Triumph Against All Odds
Competing as Highgate Harriers' sole representative in the Women's Under-17s category, Allen faced formidable competition from the country's elite long-distance runners. Her triumph marks the club's first national championship win since 1914, ending a 110-year drought in spectacular fashion.
The St Marylebone School student conquered the demanding 5km course at Hardwick East Park in just 16 minutes and 17 seconds, outpacing 155 other competitors to claim the gold medal. Her victory represents a monumental achievement for both the young athlete and her historic club.
Allen's Reaction to Her Record-Breaking Performance
"I'm proud, but I have honestly slightly stunned myself with the result," Allen confessed after her landmark win. "The National is always one of my highlight races of the year – the nerves, the supporters and the competition forms one of the most tense yet exciting atmospheres."
The teenage sensation described the experience as "almost surreal," noting that "to feel strong and in control throughout the whole race" exceeded her expectations. "Although my fitness has been improving, to be competing with the best in the country as a serious prospect was an incredible feeling," she added.
Allen particularly cherished the moment she broke the finishing tape, calling it "one of my proudest moments" and "the final piece of the puzzle falling into place."

The young champion was quick to acknowledge the crucial role played by her coach, Errol Peak. "I'm endlessly grateful for the support of my coach, Errol Peak, whose humour, knowledge and dedicated belief in my success has undoubtedly made the greatest impact on my running career," Allen stated.
Looking ahead, Allen expressed excitement about upcoming competitions, saying, "I'm now looking forward to the English Schools Cross-Country finals in a few weeks time and hopefully carrying this momentum into a strong track season."
