NBA Star Condemns Atlanta Hawks' Strip Club Collaboration

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet has publicly criticized the Atlanta Hawks for their planned theme night with the iconic strip club Magic City, arguing that it promotes the objectification of women and conflicts with the NBA's community values.

Magic City's Cultural Significance in Atlanta

Magic City is a renowned establishment in Atlanta, frequently referenced in hip-hop music and frequented by celebrities. Notable visitors have included rappers like Drake, Lil Yachty, Migos, Jack Harlow, and Future, as well as athletes such as Michael Jordan. In 2018, MLS team Atlanta United celebrated their championship at the club, and in 2020, it gained national attention when Los Angeles Clippers player Lou Williams visited during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a quarantine controversy.

Details of the Hawks' Theme Night

The Atlanta Hawks announced a special theme night in collaboration with Magic City for their game against the Orlando Magic on March 16. The event will feature a performance by Atlanta native rapper TI, along with offerings of Magic City's famous wings and branded merchandise for fans.

Kornet's Ethical Concerns

In a Medium post, Kornet, who is a devout Catholic, expressed strong disapproval of the partnership. He stated that the theme night "would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society." He emphasized that the Hawks' press release, which praised Magic City as an "iconic cultural institution" in hip-hop and Black culture, failed to acknowledge its primary identity as a strip club.

Impact on Fan Experience and Values

Kornet highlighted concerns about the appropriateness of the event for diverse NBA fans, including families and younger audiences. He wrote, "We desire to provide an environment where fans of all ages can safely come and enjoy the game of basketball and where we can celebrate the history and culture of communities in good conscience. The celebration of a strip club is not conduct aligned with that vision." This criticism raises questions about the balance between cultural celebration and ethical responsibility in professional sports partnerships.
