Henderson speaks out after 'scary' World Cup injury

Jordan Henderson has thanked fans for their support after suffering a freak wrist injury during England's World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico. The 36-year-old midfielder was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament and is expected to undergo surgery.

Injury during celebrations

Henderson, an unused substitute, was celebrating England's 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City when he fell over an advertising hoarding, landing awkwardly on his left arm. Dan Burn gestured for medical staff, and Henderson was carried off on a stretcher, requiring oxygen before being taken to hospital.

England manager Thomas Tuchel told the BBC: 'Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.'

Henderson's message

On Instagram, Henderson wrote: 'A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.'

England teammate Marc Guehi provided an update on Henderson's condition, telling the Lion's Den programme: 'Hendo's good. He's in a better place than he was yesterday. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to a speedy recovery.'

England's quarter-final clash

England will face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, with kick-off at 10pm BST. Guehi will be tasked with stopping Norway's Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals at the World Cup. 'I know he'll be up for it,' Guehi said. 'It'll be a challenge, but it's good to see some familiar faces and try and do our best and try and get a win. It's going to be fun.'
