The decision, confirmed by stand-in captain Steve Smith, comes after inspection of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) wicket, which is reported to have up to 10mm of grass on its surface. This has prompted selectors to overlook Victorian off-spinner Todd Murphy, who was called into the squad as cover for the injured Nathan Lyon.
Smith, returning to leadership after experiencing vertigo symptoms, explained the rationale. "A lot of the wickets we're playing on at present are certainly more seam-friendly than spin-friendly," he stated. "This one out here looks like it's going to offer a fair bit of assistance for the seam bowlers." He was quick to add that Murphy's omission was not a reflection of his skill, but purely a response to the conditions.
