Henry Nicholls scored an unbeaten 119 from 164 balls, his 11th Test century, as New Zealand moved into a commanding position on the third day of the second Test against England at Trent Bridge. The tourists reached 252 for three in their second innings, establishing a lead of 352 runs, with Daryl Mitchell unbeaten on 35 at stumps.
England, led by Joe Root in the absence of the suspended Ben Stokes, were bowled out for 291 before lunch, conceding a first-innings lead of 100. Despite early breakthroughs, including Jofra Archer dismissing Tom Latham and Josh Tongue removing Devon Conway, a dropped catch by wicketkeeper James Rew off Rachin Ravindra proved costly. Ravindra went on to score 76, sharing a 161-run partnership with Nicholls.
The afternoon session saw New Zealand dominate, with Nicholls grinding down the England attack. Archer bowled sparingly, and Matthew Fisher struggled against left-handers. Nicholls offered a chance on 42 after tea, gloving a short ball from Archer, but Rew failed to hold the catch.
Earlier, Fisher scored a valuable unbeaten 50 from number nine, helping England reach 291. Matt Henry took five for 80, supported by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell, whose glovework drew praise. Blundell's presence stood up to the stumps stifled England's batsmen, continuing a trend from previous matches.
England's hopes of chasing a target were dimmed by the pitch holding together and the forecast of continued heatwave, but the substantial lead left them facing an uphill battle. Root's captaincy was tested as he rotated his bowlers, but the team struggled to create chances.
Nicholls, recalled after a spell out of the side, has averaged 96 in the Plunket Shield this season and has filled the gap left by Kane Williamson's retirement. His partnership with Ravindra put New Zealand in a dominant position, setting up a potential series decider at Trent Bridge next week.
