Arsenal expressed dissatisfaction with the length of the grass at the Metropolitano Stadium just hours before their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid. With kick-off approaching, CBS Sports captured footage of Arsenal's ground staff inspecting the pitch using a device to measure the surface height.
UEFA Regulations and Inspection
According to UEFA rules, the grass height must not exceed 30mm, and the entire playing surface must be cut uniformly. CBS Sports reporter Guillem Balague revealed that Arsenal requested UEFA to conduct an inspection, which confirmed the pitch was cut to 26mm, well within the allowed range of 21-30mm.
Balague stated, 'Arsenal's ground staff came in thinking the grass is too high, we're not happy with it. They asked UEFA to measure it. They thought it was Simeone creating some dark arts. After a while, UEFA said no, it's actually 26mm. The limit is 30mm. By the way, it was the same as when they played Barcelona here.'
Previous Complaints by Barcelona
Earlier this month, Barcelona also complained about the grass length at the Metropolitano Stadium ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico. Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was seen discussing the pitch with UEFA's match delegate during the team's final training session. However, Atletico had not breached UEFA rules as the pitch was again measured at 26mm.
Managers often raise concerns over grass height because a longer surface slows down the ball, making it more difficult for teams that rely on fast-passing play. Arsenal's worries reflect a strategic attempt to ensure a fair playing field.
