Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has delivered an injury blow, confirming that exciting young forward Estevao will be unavailable for the team's upcoming Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.
Injury Sidelines Blues' Teenage Talent
The 18-year-old Brazilian was absent from the matchday squad on Tuesday night as Chelsea secured a 3-1 victory over Cardiff City to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Maresca revealed the reason post-match, stating, 'It's a small problem, a muscle problem. He won't be available for Newcastle. We will see for the next one.'
This setback takes some shine off a positive evening for the Blues, for whom Estevao has been a bright spark in his debut season. The teenager has made 21 appearances, contributing five goals and an assist.
Mixed Night in Cardiff for Chelsea
The quarter-final win at the Cardiff City Stadium was sealed by a second-half brace from substitute Alejandro Garnacho and a goal from Pedro Neto. Maresca was full of praise for his impact substitutes, highlighting the importance of minutes for squad players like Tyrique George, Marc Guiu, and Facundo Buonanotte.
However, the night also brought a disciplinary issue, with midfielder Moises Caicedo now suspended for the first leg of the semi-final after receiving a booking for sarcastically applauding the referee.
Maresca's Message to the Fans
Following hints of potential tension behind the scenes, the Italian coach took time to thank the travelling Chelsea supporters who sang his name in Wales. 'I'm happy. We're going to play another semi-final. It's what the fans deserve,' Maresca said. He added, 'The support, they have always been there.'
Chelsea will discover their opponents for the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final after Wednesday's remaining quarter-final ties are completed.
