A Dalek draped in an England flag and singing the iconic chorus of "Three Lions" was spotted on what is known as "London's most patriotic estate" as England defeated Mexico 3-2 in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Unusual visitor on the Kirby Estate
The Kirby Estate in southeast London is renowned for its spectacular display of St George's Cross flags adorning windows, gates, balconies, and lampposts, alongside vibrant murals honouring England's sporting heroes. A TikTok video posted by the account @kirbyestate, which regularly showcases the estate's displays and community spirit, revealed the extraordinary visitor ahead of the match.
The clip features a Dalek draped in an England flag, belting out the chorus of the 1996 anthem "Three Lions" in its robotic voice, set to the Doctor Who theme music. The overlaid caption reads: "Just when you think you've seen it all on here." The person recording can be heard chuckling and saying "that's amazing," as the Dalek appears in front of a wall painting of England midfielder Eberechi Eze, who grew up near the estate, repeating the famous "it's coming home" chorus.
Dalek's tribute to England victory
The Dalek is also seen wearing a replica of the Jules Rimet trophy atop its dome. The footage concludes with the Dalek attempting a strike at goal, nudging the ball past a young goalkeeper and into the net, with a message stating: "Keeper should have done better!!" England's 3-2 victory over Mexico saw two goals from Jude Bellingham in as many minutes, followed by a third from Harry Kane, with pubs remaining open until 5am.
The Daleks, among the most recognisable villains in television history, debuted in Doctor Who in 1963. Their distinctive pepper pot-style appearance and war cry of "Exterminate!" have become symbols of British television. The "Three Lions" anthem, penned by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and performed by the Lightning Seeds, was launched prior to Euro 1996, and its refrain "It's coming home" has become a popular rallying cry for England.
Upcoming quarter-final clash
England return to the pitch on Saturday evening, travelling to Miami for their quarter-final clash against Norway, with kick-off scheduled for 10pm GMT. Live coverage will be available on ITV1 and ITVX. Norway are expected to present a formidable challenge, with superstar forward Erling Haaland poised to test England's ambitions of reaching the semi-finals.
