Former Premier League Manager Roberto De Zerbi 'Keen' on Manchester United Role
Manchester United have reportedly placed Roberto De Zerbi on their managerial shortlist as they prepare to appoint a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim. The club is carefully evaluating candidates, with current caretaker manager Michael Carrick emerging as a strong contender following his successful interim tenure.
Carrick's Impressive Interim Spell
Michael Carrick, a former Manchester United midfielder, has significantly boosted his chances of securing the full-time position. Since taking over as caretaker, he led the team to victories in his first four matches, including surprising wins over rivals Manchester City and title favorites Arsenal. Carrick's unbeaten run extended to seven games before ending with a defeat to Newcastle United last week.
Despite this setback, Manchester United have climbed to third place in the Premier League, up from fifth at the time of Amorim's dismissal. The team remains on track to qualify for next season's Champions League, showcasing Carrick's positive impact. However, the club intends to delay a final decision until the end of the season, keeping all options open.
De Zerbi's Managerial Credentials
Roberto De Zerbi, 46, is a prominent figure on Manchester United's radar. He previously enjoyed a successful stint at Brighton in the Premier League before moving to Marseille in 2024. At Marseille, he secured a second-place finish in Ligue 1 last season and started the current campaign strongly before stepping down in February.
According to reports, De Zerbi is 'keen' to return to the Premier League and take over at Manchester United. His attacking, possession-based football style has reportedly impressed senior figures at Old Trafford, as well as executives at Manchester City.
Other Candidates and Endorsements
Initially, England manager Thomas Tuchel and Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner were considered leading candidates for the role after Amorim's departure. However, Tuchel has since signed a contract extension with the national team, while Glasner has faced criticism for his handling of an impending exit from Crystal Palace.
Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has publicly endorsed De Zerbi for the job. Stam praised De Zerbi's tactical acumen, man-management skills, and ability to instill confidence in players, stating he would be 'very happy' if De Zerbi were chosen over Carrick.
Competition from Tottenham
De Zerbi has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, who have held talks about appointing him in the summer. This move would depend on Tottenham avoiding relegation, as they currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the drop zone after five consecutive defeats.
Manchester United return to action against Aston Villa, while Tottenham face a tough match against reigning champions Liverpool. The managerial saga continues to unfold as both clubs navigate critical periods in their seasons.
