Troy Deeney's Scathing Assessment of Arsenal's Performance
Troy Deeney, the former Watford captain, has launched a blistering critique of Arsenal's display in their pivotal 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, asserting that as many as six starting players failed to meet the required standard. The loss at the Etihad Stadium has dramatically tightened the Premier League title race, with City now just three points behind the Gunners and holding a game in hand.
A Crushing Blow to Arsenal's Title Hopes
Erling Haaland's decisive second-half strike secured a vital victory for Pep Guardiola's side, cutting Arsenal's lead at the summit to a mere three points. The result means that if Manchester City triumph in their midweek fixture at Burnley, they will leapfrog Arsenal to the top of the table with only five matches remaining in the season.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal showed moments of promise. Kai Havertz equalized shortly after Rayan Cherki's magnificent solo effort had given City a 16th-minute lead, igniting hopes of a morale-boosting result for Mikel Arteta's team. The visitors created several opportunities in an entertaining second half, with Eberechi Eze hitting the woodwork and Havertz missing a significant chance after being set up by Martin Odegaard.
Deeney's List of Underperformers
Analyzing the match in the CBS Sports studio, Deeney did not hold back in his assessment. He explicitly named six Arsenal starters whom he believed fell short of expectations:
- Noni Madueke
- Martin Zubimendi
- Martin Odegaard
- Cristhian Mosquera
- Piero Hincapie
- Declan Rice
"When Arsenal have this many players not turning up and putting in a level of performance that you would expect, you have to question it," Deeney stated emphatically. "You have to question where they were." He specifically noted that Rice, whom he described as a friend, arguably did not deliver his usual performance.
Arteta's Defiant Response and the Road Ahead
In the aftermath of the setback, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained defiant about his team's title credentials. "I believe today, I believe on Wednesday, I believed a week ago because I see them every day and I know the level that we have," Arteta told reporters. "But today, if they need to be more convinced, I think they are now more convinced. We are talking about it in the dressing room. It's a new league now. We have three points of advantage, they have the game in hand. Everything is still to play for."
Arsenal now face a critical week, preparing to host Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium in their next Premier League outing. The match represents a crucial opportunity to bounce back and demonstrate that their title challenge remains robust despite this significant stumble.
Deeney Predicts 'Epic Meltdown' but Sees Title Race Twists
While Deeney anticipates an "epic meltdown" among Arsenal's fanbase following the defeat, he insists the Premier League title race is far from over. He pointed to potential twists and turns in the remaining fixtures for both clubs.
"This has created a wonderful storyline," Deeney remarked. "But also, I've been trying to keep it in and be respectful, but the Arsenal meltdown will be epic. The online meltdown will be epic." He suggested that Arsenal's upcoming fixture against Newcastle, traditionally a difficult encounter, might be easier due to the Magpies' current struggles under Eddie Howe.
However, Deeney highlighted that matches against Fulham, West Ham, Burnley, and Crystal Palace in the run-in are not guaranteed victories. "West Ham have a bit of form and they're fighting for their lives. Fulham and Marco Silva have had this weird season where they've not really done anything," he noted, implying potential pitfalls for the Gunners.
The Champions League Dilemma and City's Strength in Depth
Deeney also raised a strategic concern for Arsenal, suggesting that Mikel Arteta may need to prioritize either the Premier League or the Champions League to avoid ending the season without silverware. "In the middle of this there's the Champions League semi-finals and you have to prioritise one of the two," he argued. "I don't think, with what we're seeing at the moment, that Arsenal can keep running these players into the ground and keep doing it."
In contrast, he pointed to Manchester City's formidable squad depth, which allows them to compete on multiple fronts without compromising quality. "Manchester City on the other hand, all they have to worry about now is the Premier League. Obviously there's the FA Cup, but if they win this Premier League, with this squad... He could put James Trafford in, Tijjani Reijnders in, John Stones, Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Savinho, Phil Foden for the FA Cup and that's still an unbelievable team."
Praise for City's Match-Winner
Amid his criticism of Arsenal, Deeney reserved special praise for Manchester City's Rayan Cherki, whose brilliant solo goal set the tone for the match. He credited the Frenchman with "adding something different" to Pep Guardiola's squad this season.
"These guys [Jeremy Doku, Cherki and Antoine Semenyo] won it for Manchester City. They were able to take Arsenal deep into the box," Deeney explained. "This area [right-back] has been a problem for Arsenal, whether it's been Mosquera, whether it's been Ben White. Mosquera got a yellow card within the first 20 minutes and he couldn't really get tight then. But when you have this player Cherki, it doesn't matter. He's by far Manchester City's best player at the moment."
The defeat leaves Arsenal's title destiny out of their own hands, with Manchester City now in control of their own fate. As the season reaches its climax, the pressure mounts on Mikel Arteta's squad to respond to this criticism and rediscover their form in time to sustain a genuine championship challenge.
