Novak Djokovic made a special request for a wedding invitation after a couple got engaged during his opening match at Wimbledon on Centre Court. The Serbian tennis star, aiming for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title, was taking a break after the first set against Wu Yibing when cheers erupted from one corner of the arena.
Djokovic's Heartfelt Gesture
BBC presenter Clare Balding initially did not know the cause of the commotion, but Djokovic was seen forming a heart with his hands as play was about to resume. The seven-time Wimbledon champion then turned to the couple and said, 'I want an invitation to the wedding!'
BBC commentator Andre Cotter and pundit John McEnroe soon realised a proposal had taken place at the All England Club. The cameras captured the newly-engaged couple, who appeared to grant Djokovic's wish of a wedding invite before celebrating with a kiss.
Pundits React to 'High-Risk' Proposal
'Novak has just said he wants an invitation to the wedding!' said McEnroe, a three-time Wimbledon champion and seven-time Grand Slam winner. 'Apparently this lady was just asked if she would marry this gentleman. It's quite a moment for these two!'
Cotter added, 'Alright, concentrate on the tennis, everyone! That's a high-risk strategy, isn't it? Asking that question on Centre Court at Wimbledon…' McEnroe then suggested the man likely checked beforehand, saying, 'He probably mentioned it… he probably said, "if by some chance I decided to do this, what would you say?" just to make sure.'
Djokovic's Wimbledon Campaign
Djokovic, who is bidding to win a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title, continued his match after the interruption. The proposal added a memorable moment to the first day of the tournament at the All England Club.
