Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has delivered a surprising verdict in the debate over the world's best midfielder, snubbing Gunners star Declan Rice in favour of Paris Saint-Germain's Vitinha.
Gallas's Verdict on the Midfield Maestros
While full of praise for Declan Rice and his transformative impact at Arsenal, Gallas believes the 25-year-old Portuguese international Vitinha currently holds the crown. Speaking to OLBG, Gallas stated, "Maybe he's one of the best midfielders, but not the best because I think the best midfielder at the moment is Vitinha."
Gallas did not hold back in his admiration for Rice's development, however. He highlighted how the 26-year-old England star has elevated his game since his move from West Ham United. "You can see that in every game he plays, he takes that pressure on his shoulder and he looks like he's the boss of that midfield line," Gallas said. He praised Rice's consistency, defensive work, goal threat, and perfect execution.
Rooney's 'Irreplaceable' Praise for Rice
Gallas's comments follow glowing praise for Rice from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney. After Arsenal's recent win over Everton, Rooney described Rice's performance as "absolutely incredible" and a "pleasure to watch."
Rooney went further, labelling Rice as "irreplaceable" for the England national team and tipping him as a future Three Lions captain. "He's the right one to take over [from Harry Kane] for me, because of his drive, his personality. Everyone seems to love him," Rooney added on The Wayne Rooney Show.
Arsenal's Title Charge and the Need for Caution
With Rice instrumental in midfield, Arsenal are considered favourites to win the Premier League this season after three consecutive second-place finishes. Gallas believes the squad has the strength to finally clinch the title but issued a stern warning.
"They have to be careful," the Frenchman cautioned, pointing to the gruelling schedule and current injuries. "We know that at those moments, Arsenal sometimes can drop some points." He noted that while rivals like Manchester City have offensive power, they are defensively vulnerable, presenting a "good opportunity" for Mikel Arteta's side.
Meanwhile, Vitinha, whom Gallas rates as the planet's top midfielder, has been a key figure for PSG. Since joining in 2022, he played 59 times and scored eight goals last season, helping the French giants to a historic treble.
