Steven Gerrard Laments Liverpool Missing Out on Arsenal's Declan Rice
Gerrard: I Wish Liverpool Had Signed Arsenal's Declan Rice

Steven Gerrard Voices Regret Over Liverpool's Failure to Sign Declan Rice

In a candid interview, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has openly admitted he "wishes" his former club had secured the signing of Declan Rice before Arsenal swooped in. The Arsenal midfielder, who joined the Gunners in a £105 million deal from West Ham United in the summer of 2023, has since become a pivotal figure in Mikel Arteta's squad.

Rice's Rise to Prominence at Arsenal

Since his high-profile move, Declan Rice has solidified his status as a key player in Arsenal's midfield. The England international is enjoying a stellar campaign, with Arsenal still competing across all four major competitions. His recent performance in the Champions League, where he scored a superb goal in a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, has further highlighted his growing influence.

Gerrard, speaking to TNT Sports, did not hold back in his praise. "He's going from strength to strength," Gerrard remarked. "I think he's one of the best in the world. I think he has become one of the best in the world." The former Liverpool captain specifically lamented the missed opportunity for his old club, stating, "It was a fantastic move for him. I wish we [Liverpool] signed him here, actually."

Credit to West Ham and Arteta's Coaching

Gerrard also credited West Ham and former manager David Moyes for Rice's development. "West Ham did a great job under David Moyes," he said. "I think David Moyes has really schooled him in how to play the position tactically." He further emphasized the impact of Arsenal's coaching staff, noting, "His confidence from playing well for England and being around that group of players, he's just gone to the next level now at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. Fantastic coaching from him and he's up there now in the shout to be one of the world's best in that position and in that role."

Support from Fellow Pundit Steve McManaman

Echoing Gerrard's sentiments, former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman added his own analysis. "I think when you think of his role and you look around Europe, you have Pedri who is beautiful, Vitinha is great, but the way he [Rice] plays I'd certainly say he's the best because he's a different type of player to them," McManaman explained. "But he's so effective, last year he was amazing and he's stepped up again this year."

This discussion comes at a time when Liverpool were navigating their final season under Jurgen Klopp, who departed Anfield in the summer following Rice's transfer. The contrast between Rice's success at Arsenal and Liverpool's midfield options has sparked reflection among club icons, underscoring the significant impact of transfer decisions in elite football.
