Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has publicly expressed his profound embarrassment and shame following an unsavoury incident with a cameraman after his team's Premier League defeat.
Post-Match Confrontation at St James' Park
The incident occurred on the pitch at St James' Park on Saturday, immediately following Manchester City's 2-1 loss to Newcastle United. Guardiola, who was engaged in animated discussions with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes and the match officials, reacted angrily after being filmed in close proximity.
In a moment of clear frustration, the City boss grabbed the headset of a nearby cameraman. The confrontation was captured on video and quickly circulated, drawing significant attention and criticism.
A Public Apology and Admission of Error
Addressing the media in a press conference on Monday 24 November 2025, Guardiola did not shy away from his mistake. He stated plainly, "I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it. I don't like it."
He revealed that his apology was almost instantaneous, confirming, "I apologised to the cameraman after one second." The manager explicitly admitted he had "made a huge mistake" with his actions on the field.
Despite this admission, Guardiola was keen to contextualise his passion, adding, "I defend my team and my club, that's for sure." His frustration was partly rooted in the decision to award Harvey Barnes' 70th-minute winning goal, which City felt involved a foul on goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Downplaying Exchange and Future Officiating Concerns
Guardiola moved to downplay what appeared to be a heated exchange with Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes, emphasising their long-standing positive relationship. "We have known Bruno for many, many years... I always have a good relationship with him," he explained.
However, the City manager hinted that his issues with the match officiating were not fully settled. He pointedly remarked that "the referee was involved" throughout the 95 to 98 minutes of the match, concluding with, "On Friday, we talk," suggesting a more detailed critique would follow their upcoming Champions League fixture.
The defeat marks Manchester City's fourth loss in the Premier League this season. The team now sits fourth in the league phase table with 10 points, turning their focus to Tuesday's Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen, where they have made a stronger start.
