Ex-Arsenal Star Alex Iwobi Praises His 'Unique Groins' After Fulham Wonder Strike
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has attributed his spectacular goal against Tottenham Hotspur to what he describes as his "unique groins." The 29-year-old Nigerian international scored a stunning long-range effort during Fulham's 2-1 Premier League victory at Craven Cottage on Sunday, March 2, 2026.
A Goal of Exceptional Quality
Iwobi's strike came in the 34th minute, doubling Fulham's lead after Harry Wilson had opened the scoring earlier in the match. Despite a second-half consolation goal from Tottenham's Richarlison, Fulham secured all three points with a 2-1 win. Iwobi's goal was particularly remarkable for its technique and precision.
The midfielder unleashed a powerful shot from distance that found the bottom corner with pinpoint accuracy. What made the finish unusual was Iwobi's use of his instep to generate both speed and precision, sending the ball flying past Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario.
Iwobi's Unusual Explanation
Following the match, Iwobi offered an unconventional explanation for his technical prowess. "Unique. That's the best way to put it," said Iwobi when describing his goal. "I don't think anyone has groins to open up their hip and side-foot it like that. When H [Harry Wilson] passes to me I had one thought to side-foot it. I do it in training, so my team-mates weren't surprised."
Fulham manager Marco Silva expressed no surprise at Iwobi's capability, ranking the goal among the player's best since joining from Everton in 2023. Iwobi has now scored 19 goals for Fulham during his tenure at the club.
"It's one of his best goals, he is capable to do these type of things," said Silva. "He is stronger when he tries to choose a corner and make a strong pass. It was a brilliant moment for him. It was a great performance overall, from an offensive point of view we enjoyed it – dynamic, creating chances, making it difficult for them."
Consistent Form and Manager's Praise
The goal against Tottenham marked Iwobi's second in consecutive matches, following Fulham's 3-1 victory over Sunderland. This back-to-back scoring form has contributed to Fulham's rise to ninth place in the Premier League table, with European qualification remaining a realistic possibility if they maintain their strong finish to the season.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has praised Iwobi as an underrated asset, describing him as a "manager's dream" following his performance against Sunderland. Carragher highlighted Iwobi's versatility and physical attributes during analysis on Sky Sports.
"For me, he's one of those players who can play different positions, he's a manager's dream, especially a Marco Silva dream," Carragher said. "This is a guy who spent a lot of money to bring him from Arsenal to Everton. He then took him from Everton to Fulham. He's a huge fan and you can understand why."
Carragher continued: "Physically, he's absolutely fantastic. The quality he shows, an assist from a set piece and a lovely finish as well, this quality he's got is actually underrated. We don't maybe speak about it enough. We speak about other Fulham players and rightly so, but he's certainly up there with the best players that Fulham have got this season."
Looking Ahead
Fulham will aim to extend their winning streak to three matches when they host West Ham United in another London derby at Craven Cottage on Wednesday. Iwobi's continued form will be crucial as Fulham pursue their European ambitions during the final stages of the Premier League season.
