QPR head coach Julien Stephan has offered a glimmer of hope for fans by teasing the possible return of marquee summer signing Kwame Poku, who has endured a challenging first season at the club. The winger, signed from Peterborough United last summer, has been plagued by injuries, limiting his impact in the Championship.
Injury-Plagued Campaign for Poku
Since joining QPR, Kwame Poku has faced a stop-start campaign, playing only eight times in the Championship without registering a goal or assist. This starkly contrasts his previous season at Peterborough United, where he notched 12 goals and eight assists in League One. His troubles began early, suffering a hamstring injury in the opening fixture against Preston North End, which sidelined him for nearly three months.
After a brief return, Poku picked up another hamstring problem in January and has been absent since the 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. With QPR struggling, having lost three of their last four matches, Stephan's side is in desperate need of fresh attacking options to revive their season.
Stephan's Cautious Optimism
Speaking to West London Sport, Julien Stephan addressed Poku's situation with measured optimism. He emphasized the distinction between returning to training and being match-fit, stating, "I hope he will come back quickly. There is a difference between coming back and being competitive. There is a big difference." Stephan highlighted the need for a careful approach, given Poku's two lengthy injuries this season.
He added, "When you come back like this you need to be clever about how you restart. It was a long injury. In fact, he had two long injuries this season, so he didn’t play a lot. Of course it is good news. But we don’t consider that only one player can change everything. It’s an option. One more player. But I repeat, there’s a difference between coming back and being competitive."
Upcoming Fixtures and Team Challenges
QPR faces a critical period with upcoming matches against Middlesbrough at home on Sunday and a midweek trip to Birmingham City. The team risks slipping into mid-table obscurity if their form does not improve. In addition to Poku's absence, QPR was without key midfielder Nicolas Madsen in their recent 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United, with Ilias Chair also missing. Stephan has not provided a specific timeline for Madsen's return, only confirming his absence against Sheffield United.
There is optimism that Poku could feature in some capacity during these crucial games, offering a much-needed boost to QPR's attacking lineup. As the season progresses, Stephan will be hoping to integrate Poku effectively to enhance the team's performance and avoid further setbacks.
