Amorim defends Man Utd defence after 4-4 Bournemouth thriller
Man Utd boss Amorim defends defenders after 4-4 draw

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly backed his defenders, despite watching them concede four goals in a breathtaking 4-4 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Chaotic Eight-Goal Spectacle

The match was a rollercoaster of attacking football, with the lead changing hands multiple times. United took the lead on three separate occasions, first through Amad Diallo just before the 15-minute mark. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo equalised on 40 minutes, only for Casemiro to restore United's advantage in first-half stoppage time.

The second half exploded into life immediately, with Dominic Solanke levelling for the Cherries less than a minute after the restart. Marcus Tavernier then put the visitors ahead at 3-2 after 52 minutes. A stunning free-kick from Bruno Fernandes made it 3-3, before substitute Matheus Cunha seemed to have won it for United, making it 4-3. Bournemouth had the final say, however, with an 84th-minute finish from Eli Junior Kroup sealing a remarkable point.

Defensive Errors Under Scrutiny

The high scoreline was punctuated by individual errors in the United back line. Mistakes from Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot led directly to goals for Semenyo and Tavernier. Questionable positioning from Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro allowed Solanke's finish, while Tavernier's free-kick benefitted from a poorly organised wall and goalkeeper Senne Lammens being unable to save a shot on his side.

Amorim's Firm Defence of His Squad

Despite the obvious frailties, Amorim was defiant in his post-match assessment, insisting new signings are not the answer. "We have talent at the back and quality players, we just have to have better defending," the head coach stated. He emphasised that the characteristics are present within the squad, but greater collective work is required.

Amorim also pointed to game management as a critical failing, suggesting the points were lost in the first half due to missed opportunities. "You think we lost the two points in the second half, but I think we lost the two points in the first half. We should have more goals," he said, highlighting a need to understand the crucial moments in a match better.

In a related side story, Kobbie Mainoo's half-brother, Jordan Kwadwo Osei Mainoo-Hames, attended the match wearing a "Free Kobbie Mainoo" T-shirt, which he posted on Instagram. Mainoo came on as a 60th-minute substitute for Casemiro but is yet to start any of United's 16 Premier League games this season under Amorim.
