Manchester United Forced to Rethink Transfer Strategy Amid Defensive Injury Crisis
Manchester United have been compelled to overhaul their summer transfer plans following a series of debilitating injuries to key defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez. The club is now actively working to address these vulnerabilities in the upcoming transfer market, with a renewed focus on securing reliable defensive cover.
Injury Woes Prompt Strategic Shift
De Ligt was initially anticipated to return from his mysterious back issue before the new year, but more than three months later, there remains no indication of an imminent comeback for the Netherlands international. In his absence, Martinez became a cornerstone of interim manager Michael Carrick's impressive start, featuring in every minute of United's victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham.
However, the Argentine defender has since been sidelined with a calf injury sustained during United's 1-1 draw with West Ham. Leny Yoro has stepped in alongside Harry Maguire for the team's last three matches. There were hopes that Martinez might recover in time for this weekend's crucial clash with Aston Villa, but a minor setback during training at Carrington has ruled him out of Sunday's pivotal encounter at Old Trafford.
While Martinez's injury is not considered severe, United are determined to avoid rushing the 28-year-old back before he achieves full fitness. If he misses this weekend's match, Martinez will have sat out a staggering 95 games due to injury since his arrival from Ajax in 2022.
Murillo Emerges as Primary Target
According to reports, United have begun compiling a shortlist of center-backs to provide more dependable defensive reinforcement next season. Initially, strengthening this position was not a priority, but the club's hierarchy has altered its stance in response to persistent injury concerns.
Nottingham Forest's Brazilian defender Murillo has emerged as a player of significant interest. His Premier League experience is viewed as a major asset by INEOS, United's ownership group. Murillo signed a new contract with Forest in January 2025, securing his services until 2029, and is not actively seeking a departure at present.
Nevertheless, this situation could change if relegation-threatened Forest fail to maintain their Premier League status this season. Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are also monitoring Murillo closely, prepared to act if the 23-year-old expresses a desire to move.
Substantial Transfer Fee Anticipated
Forest are expected to demand a fee exceeding £70 million for Murillo when the summer transfer window opens. This represents a considerable profit on the approximately £15 million they paid Corinthians for the defender just three years ago.
Since joining Forest, Murillo has made 104 appearances across all competitions and was named the club's Player of the Season after an outstanding debut year. Despite Forest's challenging campaign, Murillo's reputation as one of England's finest young center-backs remains intact.
Murillo has previously expressed his ambition to play Champions League football and compete for major trophies at the highest level. He also acknowledged interest from Chelsea in 2024 but chose to continue his development at Forest at that time.
"I had the dream of playing in the Premier League," Murillo stated on the Benja Me Mucho podcast. "I thought: 'I'll go to Nottingham Forest, have a good year and then I'll go to a big club.' I had that in my head."
