Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has firmly dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Manchester City, asserting his commitment to the Stamford Bridge club where he is under contract until 2029.
"It doesn't affect me at all" - Maresca on City rumours
The Italian manager addressed the media on Friday, directly confronting the rumours that have swirled since he was named as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola, should the Spaniard leave the Etihad next summer. Maresca labelled the talk as "100% speculation" and insisted his sole focus is on Chelsea.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "In this moment, there is no time for these kind of things. First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. My focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here."
Context of cryptic comments after Everton win
The intrigue around Maresca's position intensified last week following Chelsea's victory over Everton. After the match, the coach revealed he had endured his "worst 48 hours" at the club due to a perceived lack of support, though he did not specify from whom.
Some sources have interpreted those cryptic remarks as a sign Maresca could be eyeing a sensational return to Manchester City, where he served as Guardiola's assistant during their historic Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign. When asked about the origin of the City links, Maresca replied, "I don't know, to be honest."
Future firmly in West London
Despite the recent turbulence, Maresca was unequivocal about his plans for next season. Asked directly if he would be Chelsea's manager, he responded, "Absolutely, yes." He pointed to the team's recent achievements, including reaching a third semi-final in 18 months with Tuesday's Carabao Cup win over Cardiff City, as evidence of progress.
"Last year I think was good also in terms of trophies, finishing fourth in the Premier League, bringing this club into the Champions League," Maresca reflected. "Now the target is to try to improve." His sentiment was echoed by Chelsea's travelling supporters, who chanted his name following the midweek cup victory.
The immediate task for Maresca is preparing his squad for a challenging Premier League fixture away at Newcastle United on Saturday, as he seeks to put the speculation firmly behind him.
