Emmanuel Petit has disclosed what he believes is the critical 'missing piece' for Arsenal to advance to the next level, asserting that manager Mikel Arteta should have secured the signature of Rayan Cherki before the talented winger joined title rivals Manchester City in a £34 million transfer.
Arsenal's Trophy Hopes Dim Amidst Offensive Struggles
Arsenal faces the grim prospect of another season without silverware after early exits from both domestic cup competitions and a loss of momentum in the Premier League title race. Just last month, Arteta harbored ambitions of a historic quadruple, but those dreams were dashed with a Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City and an FA Cup elimination at the hands of Championship side Southampton.
Consecutive Premier League losses, including a pivotal match against Manchester City, have slashed Arsenal's lead at the summit to a mere three points. Pep Guardiola's squad holds a game in hand, positioning them to overtake the Gunners. While Arsenal's defense has been stellar this campaign, their attack has faltered, netting only four goals across their last five fixtures.
Petit's Call for Summer Reinforcements
Petit has implored the Emirates Stadium hierarchy to strengthen Arteta's offensive arsenal during the upcoming summer transfer window. He contends that Arsenal missed a golden opportunity by not pursuing Cherki, who was highly regarded as one of Europe's most promising talents during his tenure at Lyon. Since his move to the Etihad Stadium, Cherki has continued to excel, notably scoring a spectacular opening goal against Arsenal in a recent clash.
'If Arsenal aspire to elevate their game and sustain high-quality football throughout the season, they must acquire skilled wingers,' Petit stated in an interview with Andy's Bet Club. 'Observe teams like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain—they dominate and secure top honors because they possess such players.'
Analyzing Arsenal's Current Wing Options
Petit pointed to specific shortcomings in Arsenal's squad, highlighting Bukayo Saka's injury-plagued and underwhelming season, while noting that Noni Madueke, though competent, does not rank among the elite in his position. On the left flank, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard were described as respectable but not top-tier performers.
'This is the glaring gap for Arsenal,' Petit emphasized. 'While a striker is also needed, the lack of quality on the wings has frequently hampered their attack. They must intensify competition for these roles by bringing in gifted players, including a midfielder with vision to bridge the gap between midfield and attack, much like Cherki does for City.'
Reflecting on Missed Opportunities and Future Challenges
Petit expressed regret over Cherki's move to Manchester City, remarking, 'I advocated for months that Cherki should have joined Arsenal. Pep Guardiola understands the value of such a player.' He outlined two pivotal questions for Arsenal: first, the necessity to win trophies to retain key players and maintain team cohesion, and second, the imperative to enhance flank quality even if success is achieved.
Manchester City could supplant Arsenal as Premier League leaders with a victory over struggling Burnley on Wednesday evening. Arsenal will have a chance to respond in their upcoming match against Newcastle United this weekend.
