Wayne Rooney Hails 'Incredible' Declan Rice as Future England Captain
Rooney: Declan Rice is 'absolutely incredible' for Arsenal

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has delivered a glowing verdict on Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, describing his recent performance as "absolutely incredible" and tipping him as the future captain of England.

Rooney's Pitchside Praise for Arsenal Star

The former England striker attended Arsenal's 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday, December 22, 2025, as a guest of the Toffees. Rooney was left thoroughly impressed by Rice's dominant display in the midfield, which helped ensure the Gunners will sit top of the table on Christmas Day.

Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney did not hold back in his admiration. "I have to say Declan Rice is incredible, it was a pleasure to watch," he stated. "He was by far the best player on the pitch."

Rooney elaborated on the £105 million signing's all-action performance, highlighting his intelligence and versatility. "He was all over the pitch. His decision-making – when to pass it, where to pass it, what foot to pass it to, his detail on his pass – it was a pleasure to watch," Rooney added.

A Future Leader for Club and Country

Beyond his technical ability, Rooney believes the 26-year-old possesses the leadership qualities to succeed Harry Kane as England skipper. "For me, he's the future captain of England," Rooney asserted. "He's the one who's probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point."

He praised Rice's drive and personality, noting that he is "irreplaceable" for both Arsenal manager Thomas Tuchel and the England national team ahead of next summer's World Cup. "Everyone seems to love him, who knows him, who's close to him," Rooney said.

Interestingly, Rooney also suggested that despite his colossal impact since moving from West Ham in 2023, Rice remains slightly "underrated" because many of his crucial contributions are not always eye-catching.

Verdict on Gyokeres' Role in Title Charge

While Rice controlled the game, the match-winning goal came from Arsenal's £64 million summer signing Viktor Gyokeres, who scored a penalty. The Swedish striker has netted seven times in 20 appearances since his move from Sporting Lisbon, a tally Rooney acknowledges could be higher.

However, the legendary forward defended Gyokeres, emphasising his important tactical role in Mikel Arteta's system. "He does a bit more than what you see," Rooney explained. "He occupies the two centre-backs... That creates a bit more space for your number 10 or your wide players."

Rooney concluded that if Arsenal are to win the Premier League title this season, Gyokeres will have played a "big role" in their success, even if his goal return is not yet at the prolific level he showed in Portugal.

Arsenal's focus now briefly shifts from the league to the cup, as they face Crystal Palace on Monday night for a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
