A definitive mathematical study has settled one of football's great debates, declaring Wayne Rooney's spectacular bicycle kick for Manchester United against Manchester City in 2011 as the greatest goal in Premier League history.

The verdict was reached after experts, commissioned by OLBG and working with mathematician and broadcaster Bobby Seagull, applied a bespoke scoring system to 35 of the league's most iconic strikes. Each goal was assessed across five key criteria to generate a score out of a possible 1,000 points.
The formula weighted the elements as follows: Technical Brilliance (35%), Difficulty (25%), Context (20%), Impact on the Result (15%), and the Moment (5%). Rooney's acrobatic 77th-minute winner, which sealed a 2-1 victory for United in a crucial title-race derby, scored a near-perfect 970 points.
"The maths confirms what our hearts already knew," said Bobby Seagull. "When you combine outrageous technique, high stakes and perfect execution, you get goals that transcend sport and become art. Rooney's goal is the perfect storm in my formula."

The study produced a definitive top ten list, with some legendary names featuring prominently. In second place, with 925 points, was Dennis Bergkamp's sublime pirouette and finish for Arsenal against Newcastle in 2002. Third spot went to fellow Arsenal legend Thierry Henry for his audacious flick-and-volley against Manchester United in 2000, scoring 905.

Notably, 79% of fans believe such amazing goals help cement the Premier League's global reputation as one of the world's best competitions.

The fact there are a few differences between the maths and supporters' views shows that these moments are subjective and can carry emotional weight."
