Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has delivered a blunt prediction for this weekend's Premier League clash, forecasting that his old club will leave St James' Park empty-handed.
Sutton's Score Prediction and Reasoning
Sutton, speaking to the BBC, has predicted a 2-1 victory for Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon. He pointed to Chelsea's dismal recent history at the stadium as a primary factor. Chelsea's last four visits to Newcastle in all competitions have ended in defeat, with their most recent win coming under Thomas Tuchel back in 2021.
"I usually back them at home anyway, but this prediction is mainly based on Chelsea’s recent record at St James’ Park, which is poor – they have not got anything there since 2021," Sutton explained.
He also highlighted potential issues behind the scenes at Chelsea, stating: "There is a worry for Chelsea... in terms of what is happening with Enzo Maresca. He is obviously unhappy about something, and if there is some sort of infighting going on... that does not bode well regardless of what happens on the pitch."
Form Guide and Managerial History
Both teams head into the match off the back of Carabao Cup quarter-final victories in midweek. Chelsea secured consecutive wins over Everton in the league and Cardiff City in the cup, while Newcastle knocked out Fulham.
However, Sutton believes the Magpies' squad is "being stretched more at the moment," despite their general form being inconsistent. The win over Fulham provided a boost after a "woeful" defeat to Sunderland.
The historical data strongly favours the hosts. Current Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has already taken his side to St James' Park twice last season, with both matches ending in 2-0 defeats.
Injury Concerns for Both Sides
Newcastle are grappling with a significant injury crisis, particularly in defence. The following players are confirmed absent:
- Dan Burn
- Tino Livramento
- Kieran Trippier
- Emil Krafth
- Sven Botman
- Jamaal Lascelles
Lewis Hall and goalkeeper Nick Pope are doubts but could feature. There was positive news, however, with Yoane Wissa returning to fitness and scoring against Fulham. Manager Eddie Howe praised the summer signing from Brentford, saying his "movement was excellent and his fitness was very good."
Chelsea also have their own absentees for the trip north. The Blues will be without:
- Estevao
- Liam Delap
- Romeo Lavia
- Levi Colwill
Despite Newcastle's lengthy injury list and his praise for Chelsea's "principled" style of play, Sutton is firmly backing the Magpies to extend Chelsea's miserable run at St James' Park on Saturday lunchtime.
