Veteran defender Thiago Silva has chosen a move to Portuguese giants FC Porto, bringing an abrupt end to widespread speculation linking him with a sensational return to the Premier League this January.
Premier League Trio Miss Out on Veteran Defender
The 41-year-old Brazilian international, who left Chelsea in 2024 for Fluminense, was a free agent after his contract in his homeland concluded. His impressive performances, including at the recent Club World Cup, had sparked rumours of a European comeback as he aims to secure a spot in Brazil's squad for next summer's World Cup.
According to reports from outlets including TeamTALK, three London clubs were keen on securing his services. Former club Chelsea, dealing with the long-term absence of Levi Colwill, were linked with a reunion. Meanwhile, West Ham United, under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, and Crystal Palace, who face ongoing uncertainty over Marc Guehi's future, were also credited with interest in the experienced centre-back.
'Here We Go': Romano Confirms Porto Deal
Any hopes of a Premier League return were dashed on Saturday when renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano issued his classic 'Here We Go' confirmation on social media platform X. Romano announced that Silva had agreed to join FC Porto on a short-term deal.
The agreement, strongly advocated by Porto president André Villas-Boas, will see Silva sign a contract until June 2026, with an option for a further year. The move provides manager Francesco Farioli with a new, vastly experienced defensive option.
Blow for Chelsea After Bent's Recommendation
The transfer represents a particular blow for Chelsea, who had been publicly urged to re-sign Silva by former England striker Darren Bent. Speaking to talkSPORT, Bent argued that Silva's football intelligence more than compensated for any loss of pace.
"I watched him in the Club World Cup... his brain is still quick," Bent said. "He reads the game so well and if I'm Chelsea, I'm trying to bring him back."
