West Brom appoint ex-Man Utd coach Eric Ramsay, 34, as new head coach
West Brom name Eric Ramsay as new head coach

West Bromwich Albion have confirmed the appointment of Eric Ramsay as their new head coach, turning to the former Manchester United assistant to revive their Championship fortunes.

From Old Trafford to The Hawthorns

The 34-year-old Shrewsbury-born coach takes the reins at The Hawthorns after his first senior managerial role saw him guide Minnesota United to the semi-finals of the Major League Soccer play-offs. Ramsay had been in charge of the MLS side since February 2024, having previously worked as an assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

His coaching career, which far outstrips his playing experience, also includes roles as an assistant coach for the Wales national team and spells with Swansea City, Shrewsbury Town, and Chelsea. His playing days were limited to a brief period with Welshpool Town and representing Wales in international futsal.

Swift appointment after Mason dismissal

The Baggies moved quickly to secure Ramsay's services following the sacking of Ryan Mason on Tuesday. Mason's departure came after a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City, which marked the club's tenth consecutive away loss and left them languishing in 18th place in the Championship table.

The club confirmed Ramsay's appointment hours after a penalty shootout victory over Swansea City in the FA Cup third round, a match overseen by interim coach James Morrison.

New backroom team and chairman's backing

Ramsay will be joined at West Brom by Dennis Lawrence, who served as his assistant in Minnesota. Lawrence brings considerable experience from previous roles on Roberto Martínez's coaching staff at Wigan Athletic and Everton, and a stint working with Mark Robins at Coventry City.

West Brom chairman Shilen Patel expressed his confidence in the new appointment, stating: "Throughout our recruitment process, Eric consistently exhibited the qualities to lead and succeed in the world’s most demanding football environment."

"In his time as a head coach, his teams have been characterised by intensity, organisation, and adaptability – all critical for the sustained success and growth that we envision in the short and long term," Patel added.

The chairman concluded by saying he was "pleased to welcome him to the Albion as we work with purpose to seize the opportunities and confront the challenges before us."
