Blitz Golf: Golf's Fast-Paced Answer to T20 Cricket Launches in London
In a bold move to revolutionize traditional golf viewing, Blitz Golf—the Australian-born, rapid-fire golf format often described as the sport's equivalent to Twenty20 cricket—has officially announced its expansion into the United Kingdom. Founded in 2018, Blitz Golf gained significant attention earlier this year when cricketer Travis Head sank a remarkable putt shortly after the Ashes Test in Sydney, propelling the format into the international spotlight.
UK Schedule and Format Details
Simon Zybek, founder and chief executive of Blitz Golf, revealed to City AM that the organization will today unveil a comprehensive UK schedule. Events are confirmed for the West Midlands, Lincoln, Leeds, and notably at London's Bush Hill Park Golf Club. "We've always aimed to reach England as our first global market, which is incredibly exciting," Zybek stated. "The key appeal is that this is a tournament where anyone can genuinely win."
The Blitz Golf format is ingeniously simple yet highly engaging. Each event features 12 professional golfers and 12 non-professionals—primarily athletes and celebrities—competing across a condensed course. The competition begins with six holes, after which the field is immediately cut in half. Following an additional three holes, another elimination round occurs, culminating in a thrilling finale where a substantial £10,000 prize is contested on the 10th hole.
Inclusive Participation and Broad Audience Appeal
A unique twist in the Blitz Golf format is the inclusion of two rank amateurs among the 24 participants, echoing the Australian Open's One Point Slam concept. These amateurs will qualify through social media campaigns and local club competitions, while the remaining 10 non-pro spots will be filled by golf influencers and well-known figures from sports like football, rugby, and cricket.
Zybek emphasized the format's broad spectator appeal, noting, "Our audience captures a similar crowd to LIV Golf in some respects, but we also attract significantly more non-golf fans. It's a three-hour entertainment product that draws sports enthusiasts, families, and general event-goers alongside traditional golf followers. This diverse spectator base is central to our appeal."
He added, "The experience isn't just about golf; it's about all the other elements of the day that make it exciting for fans. This holistic approach is what sets Blitz Golf apart."
Event Locations and Expected Turnout
The UK events are scheduled for June at Leeds Golf Centre, Gaudet Luce Golf Club, and Lincoln Golf Club, with the penultimate weekend featuring an evening contest at Enfield's Bush Hill Park Golf Club. Reflecting on last year's Australian series, which attracted 25,000 fans across multiple events, Zybek expressed optimism about similar turnout in the UK despite being a new entrant in the European market.
"Realistically, we could see crowds ranging from 3,000 to 5,000," Zybek projected. "We recently drew 4,000 spectators in Adelaide, Australia, where the product is more established. However, we're entering England with a larger marketing team and budget, and the demographic here is more densely populated and sports-savvy, which should help us achieve those numbers. We're doing everything possible to attract such crowds, and I believe it will be perfect."
This expansion marks a significant milestone for Blitz Golf as it seeks to redefine golf entertainment, offering a faster, more accessible alternative that resonates with modern audiences while maintaining the sport's core competitive spirit.
