Fleetwood Relieved as Family Returns from Dubai

Tommy Fleetwood, the world No. 3 golfer, has expressed profound relief after his family successfully returned to England from Dubai, amidst ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Fleetwood, who has been competing in Florida at the Players Championship, revealed that his wife, son, and two stepsons managed to leave their home of four years in the United Arab Emirates, landing back in the UK on Wednesday evening.

Family Safety Amidst Turmoil

Speaking after an impressive opening round of 69 at Sawgrass, Fleetwood acknowledged the emotional toll of the situation. "Of course," he said when asked if he felt reassured now. "It is difficult not being able to travel. That has obviously been difficult. But when you know they're fine, that's kind of a relief."

The Fleetwoods were among tens of thousands of Britons attempting to leave Dubai, with passenger flights grounded for days. "It wasn't easy," Fleetwood added. "They had one flight that was cancelled or suspended. And then they got lucky getting out because they got out on the flight and then I think something happened at the airport while they were in the air or something. So they got lucky timing wise."

Gratitude for Safety Measures

Despite the challenges, Fleetwood praised the efforts to ensure safety. "All I can say is that my family felt very safe and think the nation and the leaders have done an amazing job of making everybody feel safe and well and protected. I know my family have been safe and that's the important thing. But you would wish for different."

His wife, Clare, is reportedly very relieved, and the family is expected to join Fleetwood before an upcoming PGA Tour stop in Texas, providing a much-needed reunion.

Strong Performance on the Course

Amidst the personal concerns, Fleetwood delivered a stellar performance at the Players Championship. He carded a three-under par 69, highlighted by four birdies and an eagle. Notably, he enjoyed a golden run over a notoriously difficult stretch at Sawgrass, making an eagle at the 16th before delivering birdies on the next two holes, reaching his turn in 32.

Although three bogeys marred his back nine, the 35-year-old remained content. "I played solidly and hit a lot of good shots," he said, showcasing his resilience under pressure.

Tournament Highlights from Fellow Competitors

The event also saw notable performances from other top golfers. Rory McIlroy, despite pre-tournament concerns about a back injury that caused him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, took to the 1st tee and promptly battered a drive 330 yards down the fairway.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a low-key start with a level-par 72, stating, "I am hoping to clean it up a little bit over the next few days." Meanwhile, Justin Thomas's 68 marked a welcome return to prominence as he continues his recovery from back surgery in late 2025. "I feel confident with things," said Thomas. "But until it happens in competition, it's kind of hard to fully buy into 'you're ready'."

Fleetwood's ability to focus on his game while navigating family concerns underscores the personal challenges athletes often face beyond the course, making his relief and performance all the more commendable.
