A tragic shooting incident near TPC Sawgrass on Friday night led to significant operational delays at the Players Championship on Saturday. Police have confirmed the capture of a suspect after a domestic violence situation turned deadly, impacting the prestigious golf tournament's schedule.
Police Capture Suspect After Pursuit Onto Golf Course Property
According to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, the suspect identified as Christian Barrios shot two victims multiple times around 10:30 p.m. on Friday in a Walgreens parking lot approximately one mile from the golf course. The incident, described as domestic violence, resulted in both victims being transported to the hospital where they later died.
Sheriff Hardwick reported that canine units pursued Barrios onto TPC Sawgrass property during the manhunt. The suspect, who turned 32 on Saturday, reportedly picked up a PGA Tour radio at one point before discarding it. He then stole a black BMW vehicle, leading to a pursuit by Nassau County authorities in northeastern Florida that ended with a forced crash into wooded areas.
After fleeing on foot, Barrios was eventually located and taken into custody. Authorities noted the suspect had an extensive criminal history and was acquainted with both victims.
Tournament Operations Adjusted Following Security Concerns
The PGA Tour cited "operational considerations" in their decision to delay opening the gates to the public until 9 a.m. on Saturday, approximately two hours later than originally scheduled. Despite these security concerns and the nearby police activity, the third round of the Players Championship began as planned at 8:15 a.m. without any delay to the actual competition.
Hospitality areas at the tournament experienced even longer delays, not opening to spectators until 11 a.m. The adjustments ensured that security protocols could be properly implemented while allowing the championship to continue with minimal disruption to the professional competition itself.
The incident highlights the complex security challenges facing major sporting events and the coordination required between tournament organizers and law enforcement agencies when unexpected crises occur in proximity to competition venues.
