Izzy Hammond Emerges Unscathed from High-Speed Formula E Crash
Izzy Hammond, the 25-year-old daughter of former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, has declared "I'm alive" after walking away unhurt from a terrifying high-speed crash during Formula E's Evo Sessions event at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia.
The Dramatic Incident at Jeddah Corniche Circuit
The content creator was competing in the Duals stage of the influencer-focused competition when she experienced understeer through turn 13 and slid into the barrier in a heavy collision. "I saw the wall coming and knew I was going to enter it at speed," Hammond recounted after the incident.
Despite the force of the impact, which she estimated at 24Gs, Hammond emerged without serious injury and was checked over by medical staff at the circuit. "It wasn't a small crash," she said. "If you're going to crash, you've got to really crash."
Immediate Aftermath and Social Media Updates
In the moments following the collision, Hammond's thoughts immediately turned to her famous father. "My first thought when I was sat in that wall was 'Oh my god, everyone's watching, my dad's watching. He's gonna cry or something,'" she revealed. "Can someone just tell him I'm OK?"
On Instagram, Hammond posted a video declaring "I'm alive!" and offered apologies to her team. "Massive apologies to my team [Lola]," she said. "They've been so amazing, and I return the favour by putting my car into a wall sideways, and destroying it. So that's not great!"
Technical Analysis of the Crash
Hammond provided insight into what caused the accident, explaining: "How did I do it? I don't think I had enough heat in my tyres, so I was trying to brake and I was trying to turn with no heated tyres so it all went a little bit wrong and I hit the wall with 24Gs."
Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, Hammond maintained a positive outlook. "So, my neck hurts a little bit, but I am absolutely fine so thank you everyone that is concerned," she said. "I'm fine, this stuff happens, and now I can say I'm a proper racing driver because I've had a monumental crash."
Family History of Racing Incidents
The incident inevitably draws comparisons to her father Richard Hammond's own history of serious crashes during his television career. In 2006, while filming for Top Gear at Elvington airfield near York, Richard Hammond was driving a jet-powered dragster when a tyre blowout caused the car to veer off the track at nearly 300mph. He was airlifted to hospital and placed in an induced coma for two weeks.
More recently in 2017, he was involved in another major accident while filming The Grand Tour, crashing a 1,200-horsepower Rimac Concept One during a hill climb. The car rolled and caught fire before he escaped with a fractured knee.
Event Context and Participants
The Evo Sessions event featured numerous influencers and celebrities competing alongside Hammond, including Joshua Larkin (TheBurntChip), William Lenney (WillNE), Arthur Frederick (ArthurTV), and Ethan Payne (Behzinga). The competition also included appearances from Khaby Lame and represents the second edition of the Evo Sessions, following last year's line-up which included Sergio Aguero and Mr Beast.
While her session ended prematurely due to the crash, Hammond confirmed she was completely unharmed following the incident and even joked about needing to "sleep off my concussion." The event continues to highlight the growing intersection between motorsport and digital content creation, bringing racing to new audiences through influencer participation.
