Jack Draper Overwhelmed by Reilly Opelka's Dominant Serving at Miami Open
Jack Draper faced a challenging defeat in his opening match at the Miami Open, unable to counter the formidable serving of American star Reilly Opelka. Opelka, known for his powerful serve, delivered 25 aces across two sets, securing a straight-sets victory with scores of 7-6(3), 7-6(0). This loss marks a significant setback for Draper, the 25th seed, as he continues his comeback from a bone bruise injury that sidelined him for seven months. Miami represents just his third ATP tournament since returning to competition.
Opelka's Servebot Strategy Proves Unstoppable
Reilly Opelka, standing at 6 feet 11 inches, proudly embraces the term servebot, a label often used to describe players with exceptional serving abilities. In this match, his serving was nothing short of destructive, effectively neutralizing Draper's opportunities. Despite not facing a single break point, Draper struggled to handle Opelka's relentless serves, highlighting the American's tactical prowess on the court.
Draper reflected on the match, stating, "I didn't have many chances, especially on his serve. I didn't get broken in the match, so that was kind of my job, right? I'm still at the very early stages of coming back from what was a very difficult injury to deal with. If someone said that I'm going to be playing Dubai, Indian Wells, here, and go home feeling good, then I would have taken that, because it's a long season to go."
Katie Boulter Advances to Third Round with Impressive Performance
In contrast, Katie Boulter showcased her resilience and improving form by advancing to the third round of the Miami Open. Her opponent, 17th seed Clara Tauson, was forced to retire due to injury while Boulter led 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0. This victory continues Boulter's impressive comeback, following a title win at the WTA 250 in Ostrava last month, which has propelled her to No. 63 in the live rankings.
Boulter emphasized the importance of patience in her journey, saying, "During December and January we worked so, so hard but you never really expect it to kind of just click straight away. I told myself I needed to be patient and be ready for a battle for multiple months to then get my best self back. So it's come quite quickly. But at the same time, I know there's a long way to go. And this is just the beginning for me."
Boulter now awaits her next challenge against Karolina Muchova, the 13th seed, who secured her spot with a hard-fought victory over Camila Osorio, winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. This match sets the stage for an exciting showdown as Boulter aims to continue her upward trajectory in the tournament.
