American star Coco Gauff has launched her 2026 Australian Open campaign with a commanding first-round victory, dispatching Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets on Rod Laver Arena.
The third seed, who triumphed at Roland Garros last year, navigated a 6-2, 6-3 win to progress to the second round at Melbourne Park. Despite some familiar struggles with her serve, Gauff's baseline prowess and tactical intelligence proved too much for her opponent.
Ambition Overshadows Early Nerves
In a post-match reflection, Gauff revealed how her lofty ambitions help settle any early-tournament nerves. "I have lost in first rounds before and I've always been able to pick it up," she stated, "so I try not to put so much pressure on myself."
She left no doubt about her ultimate goal, adding: "I think at this point, I just want to win the tournament. So whether I lose first round or in the final, I think that will be as satisfying. So, until then, it's OK."
A Serve in Transition
The match highlighted an ongoing journey for the 21-year-old, who has spent the last five months remodelling her service action. This major technical overhaul began after her serve "capitulated" mid-season, leading to a coaching change ahead of the US Open with the hire of biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan.
The challenge was evident from the start. Gauff's opening service game featured three double faults, a shaky beginning that recalled the issues she has worked diligently to correct. However, she demonstrated resilience by holding serve from that difficult position.
Quality Shines Through
Even without her best serving performance, Gauff's all-court quality was undeniable. Her world-class backhand, improved forehand, and exceptional defensive skills allowed her to control rallies from the baseline. She smartly selected moments to attack, breaking Rakhimova's serve six times during the match.
Rakhimova, a Russian-born player who switched nationality to Uzbekistan this year, was ultimately outmatched. Gauff sealed the victory with minimal drama, breaking serve immediately after a brief stumble when attempting to serve out the match.
Coco Gauff will next face Serbian player Olga Danilovic in the second round on Wednesday. Danilovic earned her spot by defeating veteran Venus Williams on Sunday night, setting up an intriguing clash for a place in the third round.
