Snooker Star's Crucible Nightmare: Jones Admits 'Embarrassing' Performance
Welsh professional Jak Jones has revealed he "wanted to walk out" during his humiliating 10-2 defeat to four-time world champion Mark Selby in their first-round clash at the 2026 World Snooker Championship. The 2024 Crucible finalist described his performance as "a bit of an embarrassing performance" after falling to a comprehensive defeat against the Leicester legend.
Selby's Dominant Display Despite Self-Criticism
Mark Selby, known as The Jester from Leicester, secured a commanding victory over the world number 19 at Sheffield's iconic Crucible Theatre. The four-time champion raced to a 7-2 lead after the first session, having won the opening six frames, before returning on Wednesday evening to claim the final three frames needed to advance to the last 16.
Despite the impressive scoreline, Selby's victory featured just three half-century breaks of 67, 50, and 78. The champion himself acknowledged he "didn't play one-visit snooker" and felt "edgy at the start" following consecutive first-round exits in 2024 and 2025. "I felt like I lost the white a lot in the first session," Selby admitted, though he emphasized he missed relatively few balls during the match.
Jones' Frustration with Missed Opportunities
For Jak Jones, the defeat proved particularly galling as he believed Selby was performing below his usual standard. "I don't think Mark played his usual standard, even," Jones told the BBC. "I think Mark struggled a little bit. He gave me quite a few chances this morning, which probably made it worse."
The Welsh player explained his psychological collapse during the match: "I felt quite good coming here. I didn't feel much pressure this morning, I wasn't nervous at all, or not too nervous. I missed a few easy balls early on, which you can't do against the likes of Mark and it really got on top of me."
Jones lamented that an early breakthrough might have changed the match dynamics: "If I'd got on the board early it could have settled me down, but it wasn't to be."
Confident Selby Looks Ahead to Second Round
Despite his self-criticism, Mark Selby enters his second-round match against Chinese player Wu Yize with considerable confidence following a successful season. The champion has captured three major titles this campaign: the UK Championship, Champion of Champions, and Invitational Championship League.
"The biggest thing for me is I've come here confident, which is everything in this game and everything in life," Selby stated. "Winning the UK was massive for me, not only winning it but the way I won it as well. I didn't just scrape through, I played some good stuff."
Selby will face Wu Yize, who matched his 10-2 scoreline with a dominant victory over Lei Peifan in his opening match. The second-round encounter promises to be a sterner test for the four-time champion as he continues his quest for a fifth world title.
Psychological Impact of Crucible Pressure
The match highlighted the intense psychological pressure players face at snooker's most prestigious tournament. Jones' admission that he considered walking out demonstrates the mental toll exacted by the Crucible's unique atmosphere, while Selby's acknowledgment of early nerves reveals how even seasoned champions experience anxiety at the World Championship.
Selby's consecutive first-round exits in previous years clearly weighed on his mind, making this victory particularly significant for his tournament confidence. "The last two years I've not won the first round game," he noted, emphasizing the importance of overcoming that psychological hurdle.
For Jak Jones, the defeat represents a significant setback following his impressive run to the 2024 final, raising questions about his ability to handle the pressure of snooker's biggest stage against elite opposition.
