Ronnie O'Sullivan Extends Crucible Record with Dominant Start
Ronnie O'Sullivan has established a commanding 7-2 advantage over debutant He Guoqiang in the opening session of their World Snooker Championship first-round match at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre. The Rocket, competing in his record-extending 34th consecutive World Championship appearance, capitalized on the Chinese qualifier's early nerves to build a substantial lead.
Nervous Start for Crucible Newcomer
He Guoqiang, who earned his maiden Crucible berth by impressively defeating Jack Lisowski in the final qualifying round, struggled to settle into the iconic venue during the initial frames. The world number 47 missed several routine shots that he would typically expect to convert, appearing overwhelmed by the occasion despite his qualifying success.
"His inexperience showed as he seemed to struggle with the occasion early on," observed snooker experts, noting that the pressure of competing on snooker's grandest stage affected the newcomer's performance.
O'Sullivan's Vintage Display
Despite a light tournament schedule this season, the seven-time world champion demonstrated his enduring class with a near-flawless opening session. O'Sullivan quickly established a 2-0 lead through breaks of 72 and 97, then extended his advantage with a century break of 113 before the interval.
The 50-year-old's long-potting proved particularly impressive, with his cue action appearing smooth and confident despite his reduced competitive appearances this campaign. Even a brief moment of confusion when initially entering the arena—where he mistakenly approached the wrong table before correcting himself—failed to disrupt his rhythm.
Brief Resistance Before O'Sullivan's Finish
He Guoqiang eventually found his composure after the difficult start, winning the sixth and seventh frames with an excellent break of 77 in the latter. However, O'Sullivan responded by taking a strange eighth frame that featured both a miscue and hitting the wrong ball from distance, yet still managing a 52 break to secure it.
The session concluded with O'Sullivan producing another substantial break to end the afternoon in style, reasserting his dominance after the brief resistance from his opponent.
Potential Classic Clash Looms
The pair will resume their match on Wednesday afternoon, with O'Sullivan requiring just three more frames to reach the second round. Should he complete the expected victory, he would set up a highly anticipated clash with fellow Class of '92 legend John Higgins.
Higgins, who defeated Ali Carter in his opening match, expressed enthusiasm about the potential matchup: "It would be a great occasion. It might possibly be the last time we would play each other out there, so it would be a match to savour. We've been there for so many years and I would love to play him out there again."
The two snooker icons have previously met six times at the Crucible, including the memorable 2001 final that O'Sullivan won 18-14. Their potential second-round encounter would represent another chapter in one of snooker's greatest rivalries.
O'Sullivan's performance against He Guoqiang demonstrates that despite his age and reduced schedule, he remains a formidable force at the World Championship, where he continues to extend his unprecedented appearance record while pursuing an eighth world title.
