London is set for a sharp return to freezing conditions before the end of January, with forecasters warning of plummeting temperatures and the potential for snow.
Forecasters Predict Wintry Blast
According to the BBC Weather team, the capital will see a significant drop in temperatures, culminating in wintry showers on Friday, January 30. The forecast predicts sleet with a gentle breeze, with a possible high of just 5°C and lows hitting 0°C.
Sleet is expected to fall from 6am until 10am, and then again from 5pm until 3am on Saturday, January 31. The weather is then expected to turn to light snow into the weekend.
Met Office and Weather Maps Issue Alerts
While the Met Office’s detailed day-by-day forecast does not yet stretch to January 30, its long-range outlook supports the prediction of a cold snap. It states: “Later in the period, there is an increased chance that conditions will turn colder. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country.”
Adding to the picture, weather modelling service WX Charts forecasts significant snowfall heading for London. Its dramatic maps show a snow cloud moving directly towards the capital from the west before tracking northwards. The maps use purple shading to indicate snowfall, with darker tones representing heavier precipitation, suggesting 2mm of snow could fall per hour on the city.
London's Weather Outlook Until Month-End
The lead-up to the potential freeze will see a gradual temperature decline. According to the BBC Weather forecast for London:
Saturday, January 17: High of 10°C, low of 6°C. Light rain and light winds.
Sunday, January 18: High 11°C, low 5°C. Light cloud and light winds.
Monday, January 19: High 11°C, low 7°C. Light rain and a gentle breeze.
The cooling trend continues through the week, with highs dropping to 8°C by Friday, January 23 and down to 5°C by Monday, January 26. By Thursday, January 29, the forecast suggests a high of 5°C and a low of 1°C, setting the stage for the wintry conditions predicted for the following day.
Residents and commuters are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts from the BBC and Met Office as the potential for snow and ice becomes clearer in the coming days.
