Philadelphia International Airport has officially secured a Guinness World Record for the "Longest Line of Cheesesteaks," with an impressive 1,200-foot stretch of the iconic sandwich displayed across the B/C connectors at the airport on Tuesday. This monumental effort involved more than 100 dedicated employees and volunteers who worked tirelessly to assemble foot-long rolls using a staggering 990 pounds of Philly's Best Steak and 225 pounds of rich cheese sauce.
A Community Effort with Local Flavor
The record-setting event saw collaboration from several renowned Philadelphia airport restaurants, including Chickie's & Pete's, Geno's Steaks, Jim's South St Famous Cheesesteaks, Passyunk Steaks, and Tony Luke's. According to reports, the entire assembly process took approximately one hour to complete, showcasing the efficiency and teamwork of the participants.
Official Authentication and Community Spirit
Guinness World Record official Michael Empric was on hand to authenticate the achievement, confirming that every roll was touching to meet the strict criteria for the record. Empric expressed his admiration for the event, noting, "What I love about this is that it's so specific to the Philadelphia community. To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible. It's such a community spirit sort of thing."
Dana Krawchuk, the marketing and guest experience manager at Philadelphia International Airport, highlighted the significance of the location, stating that the airport boasts more restaurants serving cheesesteaks in a single spot than anywhere else in the city. "The airport is really the entry point for everybody coming into the city ... so we wanted to really start off really big," Krawchuk explained.
Supporting Unpaid TSA Workers
Following the official recognition of the record, the cheesesteaks were distributed to airport staff, including Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials. Many of these workers have faced financial hardship, going weeks without paychecks due to the ongoing partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown that began last month.
Pete Ciarrocchio, CEO of Chickie's and Pete's, shared his thoughts on the event, saying, "Breaking the world record is always awesome ... But one of my favorite things today was feeding the TSA with the cheesesteaks because this city is the City of Brotherly Love and these people are working without pay. Without them, nobody can be in this airport."
A Symbol of Philadelphia's Identity
This world record not only celebrates Philadelphia's culinary heritage but also underscores the city's commitment to community support during challenging times. The initiative brought together local businesses, airport personnel, and volunteers in a display of solidarity, turning a fun record attempt into a meaningful act of kindness for those affected by the government shutdown.
