Stansted Airport Implements Steep Drop-Off Fee Increases

Stansted Airport has officially raised its drop-off fees, now charging drivers £10 for a 15-minute stay and a hefty £28 for longer visits. This move, effective from March 19, 2026, follows a similar increase by Gatwick Airport, making Stansted the second major UK airport to implement such a hike. The decision has left many travelers in disbelief, particularly those who frequent the airport for its budget-friendly flights with carriers like Ryanair.

All London Airports Now Charge for Drop-Offs

With this update, all London airports have now introduced fees for short drop-off visits. City Airport began charging in January, while Gatwick increased its fee to a record-high £10 just before Christmas. Stansted's fee has risen by £3 from its previous £7 rate, a change that has sparked widespread criticism among drivers. One traveler humorously noted, 'When the drop-off fee is half the price of the flight,' highlighting the financial burden on passengers.

Airport's Justification for the Fee Hike

A spokesperson for Stansted Airport defended the increase, stating that the charge has been in place since 2012 to promote sustainable transport options. 'This measure makes an important contribution to encouraging alternative, more sustainable transport options and reducing congestion on the airport and surrounding roads,' they explained. The airport aims to discourage 'kiss and fly' journeys, which involve four car trips per flight and are considered the least sustainable way to access the terminal.

Consumer Backlash and Alternative Options

Consumer advocacy group Which? has labeled the fee increase as 'a fresh blow to travellers, just in time for the Easter holidays.' Naomi Leach, Which? Travel deputy editor, emphasized that rising fees and strict time limits add stress and expense for passengers during an already uncertain travel period. However, she pointed out that free drop-off options are available at all major UK airports, including Stansted's mid-stay car park at postcode CM24 1PZ, which offers a free 24/7 shuttle service to the terminal.

Comparison with Other London Airports

Despite the increase, Gatwick Airport still holds the record for the highest drop-off fee in London, with £10 granting only a 10-minute stay. Heathrow Airport charges £7 for a 10-minute drop-off, but free alternatives exist at its Park & Ride car parks, connected by shuttle buses every 15 minutes. These locations include Long Stay Terminal 2 & 3 on Eastern Perimeter Road, Long Stay Terminal 4 on Scylla Road, and Long Stay Terminal 5 on Northern Perimeter Road.

Impact on Travelers and Future Trends

The fee hikes at Stansted and other London airports reflect a broader trend towards promoting public transport and reducing road congestion. While this aligns with environmental goals, it places additional financial pressure on travelers, especially during peak holiday seasons like Easter. As airports continue to adjust their policies, passengers are advised to explore free drop-off zones and plan accordingly to avoid unexpected costs.
