TfL Implements Bus Service Reductions Across London

Transport for London has announced significant adjustments to bus timetables, affecting thirteen routes across the capital. These changes, set to roll out over the next two weeks, aim to address a sustained drop in passenger numbers and better align services with current traffic conditions.

Declining Ridership and Slower Services

Since the 2020 lockdown, London bus usage has been on a downward trajectory. A contributing factor is the decreasing average speed of buses, which now travel at approximately 9.17 miles per hour. This sluggish pace often makes walking a faster alternative for many commuters.

In response, TfL has been proactively modifying its bus network. Earlier this year, the transport authority proposed cutting or reducing several of London's busiest routes. The latest adjustments are part of this ongoing effort to optimize the network in light of changing travel patterns.

Detailed Route Changes

The service reductions will take effect starting Saturday, March 28. Key changes include:

  • Route 13 (North Finchley to Victoria): Frequency reduced to one bus every 10 minutes.
  • Route 32 (Kilburn to Edgware): Temporarily cut to one bus every 11 minutes.
  • Routes 60, 278, and 372: Timetable revisions implemented.
  • Route 320 (Biggin Hill Valley to Catford Bridge Station): Temporarily reduced to run once every 14 minutes during weekday peak times.

Additionally, services on the 493 (Richmond Bus Station to St George's Hospital in Tooting), E6, E7, and E10 will be reduced to just four buses per hour. The D3 route between Leamouth and Bonner Road in Bethnal Green will operate only every 17 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays.

Further Adjustments in April

The following weekend, on Saturday, April 4, further changes will be implemented:

  • Route 207 (White City to Hayes Bypass): Daytime frequency reduced to a bus every seven to eight minutes.
  • Route 38 (Clapton Pond to Victoria Bus Station): Proposed changes will halve the number of buses on Graham Road in Hackney from 12 to six per hour during the day.

These adjustments reflect TfL's strategy to streamline operations and improve efficiency amidst evolving urban mobility trends. Passengers are advised to check updated timetables and plan their journeys accordingly.
