Warwick Avenue Area Gets £3.7M Revamp for Cyclists and Pedestrians

Warwick Avenue tube station and its surrounding neighbourhood are set for a major transformation, thanks to a £3.7 million public realm scheme approved by Westminster City Council. The project aims to make the area safer and more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists, while adding greenery and improving access to the Underground.

What the Scheme Includes

The Warwick Avenue public realm project, first proposed four years ago and publicly announced in February 2024, has now received the green light from the council. Key features include cleaner and safer pedestrian and cycle routes at Warwick Avenue and Warrington Crescent, additional greenery to enhance the streetscape, and upgraded recycling facilities at the station. The scheme also promises direct access to the Underground and improved views of St Saviour’s Church, all while preserving the existing character of the street, according to council officials.

Cost and Controversy

The price tag has more than tripled from the original estimate of £1 million, raising concerns among local councillors. During a meeting on Monday, April 20, issues were raised about potential antisocial behaviour linked to narrowing a junction. Council officers have acknowledged these concerns and will consider them as the project moves forward. Westminster authorities have approved £2.9 million of the total cost to progress and complete the scheme, though no timeline has been set for completion.
