German Doner Kebab's Late-Night Bid Opposed by Police in Crime-Ridden Area
German Doner Kebab Bid Opposed by Police Over Crime Fears

A German Doner Kebab branch in Covent Garden has applied to extend its operating hours for takeaway service until the early morning, but the Metropolitan Police has formally objected, warning it could fuel crime in an area already plagued by robberies.

Extended Hours Application

The popular kebab chain is seeking a licence to serve food until 1am from Sunday to Wednesday and until 2am from Thursday to Saturday, with the premises permitted to remain open until 3am. Currently, the restaurant is allowed to serve late-night refreshment until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1am on Friday and Saturday.

Police Objection

Police Constable Adam Deweltz filed a written objection, stating that the extended hours could lead to increased crime and disorder, given the location in Westminster's Cumulative Impact Zone. This zone is already saturated with late-night venues, contributing to negative impacts such as noise, drinking, and litter.

PC Deweltz said: "The premises in question operates as a fast-food restaurant in an area that is already saturated with late-night licensed venues. The applicant already benefits from a premises licence that exceeds Westminster's Core Hours Policy, further intensifying concerns about cumulative impact."

He added that late-night refreshment is particularly attractive to individuals who have consumed alcohol, and extending hours would encourage patrons to remain in the area longer, prolonging activity and increasing potential for crime and disorder.

Crime Statistics

Westminster's Cumulative Impact Assessment shows that thefts are highly concentrated in the West End, with over half occurring between 6pm and 6am. Robberies are also concentrated there, with 70% happening during the same timeframe.

Conditions Proposed

German Doner Kebab has agreed to several conditions, including ensuring no noise from the property creates a public nuisance, and posting signs instructing customers to leave the area quietly.

Decision Pending

A licensing hearing will take place on Thursday, June 18, to decide on the application.
