New State-of-the-Art Leisure Centre Coming to North London
New Leisure Centre for North London

North London is set to receive a brand new leisure centre as part of a major redevelopment of the Great North Leisure Park in Finchley. The plans, which have been approved by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, include state-of-the-art swimming, fitness, and family-friendly facilities designed to be fully accessible.

What's Planned for the Site?

The existing leisure park in East Finchley, known for its cinema, bowling alley, and swimming pool, will be demolished to make way for a comprehensive redevelopment. Developer Arada London will construct a new leisure centre that promises modern amenities for all ages. The current centre will remain open until the new one is completed, ensuring no disruption to visitors' routines.

In addition to the leisure centre, the plans include a new sports pavilion next to the Glebelands playing fields. This will provide upgraded changing facilities for youth teams and local clubs that use the site. Play areas, green roofs, and improved walking and cycling paths are also part of the project.

Housing and Office Space

The 11-acre site will see its large car park replaced with 1,485 new homes and dedicated office spaces. This significant increase in housing aims to address local demand while maintaining community amenities.

The redevelopment has been in the works for several years, with initial news emerging in 2024. However, final approval from the Mayor has only recently been granted. The timeline for construction start remains unannounced, but updates are expected soon.

This project is part of broader efforts to enhance North London's infrastructure, alongside other developments like the new open water swimming area in the River Thames and the upcoming Olympic-sized lido in Canary Wharf.
