Motorists and residents in Kensington and Chelsea are being advised to plan ahead for significant disruption this month, as a series of essential utility and highway works get underway. The borough will see numerous road closures, lane restrictions, and temporary traffic controls throughout January.
Major Utility and Council Projects
Key utility companies, including Thames Water, UK Power Networks, Cadent Gas, Virgin Media, and O2, are carrying out installations and repairs. Kensington and Chelsea Council (RBKC) and Transport for London (TfL) are also implementing several major schemes. The works, compiled from the online directory one.network, range from short-term lane closures to prolonged road shutdowns.
Key Road Closures and Restrictions
Some of the most notable disruptions include a full road closure on Clarendon Road from January 5 until February 9 for RBKC works. A major closure on the Westway is scheduled from 9pm on January 9 until 5am on March 23 for TfL works.
Other significant ongoing works include:
- Pavilion Road: Full closure from January 5 to 9 (Thames Water).
- Sloane Square: Lane closure from January 12 to February 27 (RBKC).
- Holland Street: Road closure from January 26 to 28 (RBKC).
- Aubrey Walk: Road closure from January 26 to February 1 (Thames Water).
Temporary Traffic Lights and Lane Closures
Many other roads will operate under temporary traffic management systems. Royal Hospital Road will have two-way signals from January 7 to 10 for UK Power Networks. Ladbroke Grove will also have two-way signals until January 6 for RBKC works.
Further lane closures affecting key routes are planned for:
- Gloucester Road: Lane closure from January 5 to 21 (RBKC).
- Kensington High Street: Lane closures from January 6-9 and again on January 19 (Thames Water).
- Notting Hill Gate: Lane closure on January 14 (Thames Water).
- Brompton Road: Lane closure on January 12-13 (O2).
Residents and commuters are urged to check for updates before travelling, as dates and times may be subject to change. The council advises using alternative routes where possible and allowing extra time for journeys across the borough this month.
