London Motorist Pleads Guilty to Fatal M20 Hard Shoulder Collision

A 29-year-old man from Bexleyheath in south-east London has admitted responsibility for a devastating motorway crash that claimed the lives of two women on the hard shoulder of the M20 in Kent. Bilal Tahir entered guilty pleas at the Old Bailey on Monday to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 8:20 AM on October 17, 2022, on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 1 and 2. According to Kent Police, the incident involved four vehicles: a grey Infiniti Q30 Sport, a black BMW X5, a black VW Golf, and a white Iveco Daily van.

The victims, Dr Habiba Hajallie and Lisa Webber, were struck by a vehicle after one had stopped to assist the other on the hard shoulder. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene. A third individual, Mark Heap, sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Victims Remembered as Heroes

Dr Habiba Hajallie, affectionately known as Bee, was a dedicated NHS professional who worked on the COVID-19 frontline during the pandemic. Her family described her as a "true NHS hero" who had "selflessly sacrificed" time with her family to care for others.

The mother-of-one was employed at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford at the time of her death and also contributed her medical expertise to the Ellenor Hospice in Gravesend. A charity spokesman paid tribute, stating: "With the deepest regret, we share the devastating news of the death of our very own Doctor Habiba Hajallie who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident. Our thoughts go out to Habiba Hajallie's family and friends at this devastating time. Dr Bee will be greatly missed by us all."

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Judge Anthony Leonard KC has disqualified Bilal Tahir from driving following his guilty plea. Tahir was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on May 18, 2026.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on motorway hard shoulders, particularly regarding the risks faced by motorists who stop to assist others in distress. Kent Police continue to investigate the precise circumstances that led to this tragic collision.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of dangerous driving behavior on high-speed roadways. The sentencing hearing in May is expected to provide further closure for the families affected by this preventable tragedy.
