M11 Closed Near Stansted Airport After Serious Crash

Major disruption has hit a crucial motorway in Essex following a serious road traffic incident that has forced a complete closure of the M11 near Stansted Airport.

Severe Collision Causes Motorway Shutdown

The southbound carriageway of the M11 is currently blocked between junction seven at Harlow and junction six at the M25 Interchange. This closure comes after a vehicle was involved in a serious collision, resulting in it overturning and coming to rest on its roof on the roadside verge.

Extensive Delays and Traffic Chaos

Massive tailbacks have built up on the affected stretch of motorway, with traffic cameras showing lengthy queues and significant delays. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, February 4, at approximately 12.50am, and the road closure remained in effect more than five hours later, with queues expected to persist throughout the day.

National Highways has confirmed that the closure is likely to continue while police conduct their investigation at the scene. The condition of the driver and any potential passengers involved in the crash is not yet known.

Emergency Response and Diversion Routes

Emergency crews are working at the location, with National Highways Traffic Officers assisting with traffic management. A diversion route has been established for motorists, who are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol displayed on road signs to navigate around the closure.

This incident underscores the significant impact of serious collisions on major transport arteries, particularly near key infrastructure like Stansted Airport, and highlights the ongoing challenges for commuters and travellers in the region.
