M25 Bridge Closure: 57-Hour Weekend Shutdown for Cobham Road Works
M25 bridge closed 57 hours this weekend - diversion routes

Drivers in Surrey are being warned of a major 57-hour closure of a key bridge over the M25 motorway this weekend. Essential maintenance will shut the Cobham Road bridge, which crosses the motorway between Junction 9, Cobham, and Leatherhead.

Essential Works and Closure Details

The closure will be in force from 9pm on Friday, 19th December, until 6am on Monday, 22nd December 2025. The bridge carries Cobham Road (the A245) over the busy orbital motorway. National Highways states the work is necessary to resurface the road and rectify a defect, allowing the speed limit to be restored to 40mph. A safety inspection had previously mandated a temporary 30mph limit on the structure.

The project follows partial work completed in June 2025. This weekend's operation aims to renew the bridge's waterproofing layer to prevent rainwater damage, replace worn-out expansion joints at both ends, and fully resurface the carriageway with fresh road markings for smoother travel.

Signed Diversion Routes for Motorists

Fully signed diversion routes will be in place via Leatherhead for the duration of the closure. Access to properties and businesses on either side of the bridge will be maintained, but crossing the bridge itself will be impossible.

For southbound traffic travelling from the Cobham direction, the diversion will follow: A245 Woodlands Lane, Woodlands Road, Randalls Road eastbound, Bull Hill southbound, Station Road westbound, B2122 Waterway Road, Guildford Road southbound, and finally Cobham Road westbound.

For northbound traffic coming from the Fetcham direction, drivers will be directed onto: Cobham Road eastbound, B2122 Guildford Road, Waterway Road northbound, A245 Station Road westbound, Station Approach northbound, Randalls Road, Woodlands Road, and Woodlands Lane westbound.

Important Advice for Drivers

Motorists, particularly those driving high-sided vehicles, are urged to plan ahead. A railway bridge along the diversion route, located between Shamrock Close and River Lane in Fetcham, has a strict height restriction of 3.7 metres (12 feet 3 inches). Drivers of vehicles exceeding this height must seek alternative routes.

National Highways has also confirmed that the Cobham Road bridge will require a further closure in 2026 to replace the second expansion joint, though an exact date for that work has not yet been scheduled.
