A New Year's Day collision in South London has left two people in hospital and led to a man's arrest on suspicion of serious driving offences.
Early Hours Collision on Central Road
The incident occurred on Central Road in Morden at approximately 2.20am on Thursday, January 1. Emergency services, including the Metropolitan Police, were called to the scene following reports of a collision between two vehicles.
A section of the road was subsequently taped off as officers conducted their initial investigation into the crash. The cordon remained in place for a significant period, affecting early morning traffic in the area.
Injuries and Arrest Following the Crash
The crash resulted in two people being taken to hospital for treatment. The injured parties are a woman in her 20s and a man in his 50s.
Police have confirmed that their injuries were assessed as being neither life-threatening nor life-changing. Both individuals are expected to recover from their ordeal.
In connection with the incident, officers have arrested a 30-year-old man. He was detained on suspicion of multiple offences, including:
- Causing serious injury by dangerous driving
- Criminal damage
- Failing to stop at the scene of a collision
The suspect remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
The Metropolitan Police have issued a public appeal for information to assist their investigation. A spokesperson for the force provided details of the incident and urged witnesses to come forward.
“Police were called at 2.21am on Thursday, January 1 to reports of a collision between two cars on Central Road, Morden,” the spokesperson stated. “A woman in her 20s and a man in his 50s were injured. These were deemed not to be life-threatening nor life-changing.”
They added: “A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, criminal damage and failing to stop at the scene. Anyone with information that could help police should call 101 quoting CAD 1380/01Jan.”
Local authorities are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident. The early morning timing suggests there may have been few direct witnesses, making any potential information crucial.
The crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on the roads, even during holiday periods. Investigations by the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command are ongoing to establish the full circumstances leading to the collision.
