Pedestrian dies after collision with police car in Southwark

A man has died following a collision with a Metropolitan Police vehicle on a major central London road in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency Response Fails to Save Pedestrian

The incident occurred on Borough High Street in Southwark at approximately 12.35am on Wednesday, January 7. The pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 30s, was struck by a marked police car which was responding to an emergency call at the time.

Major Disruption and Swift Investigation Launch

The collision caused significant disruption throughout the morning. A section of Borough High Street was closed until around 9am, forcing the diversion of six bus routes before the road eventually reopened.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed their first paramedic arrived on the scene in under four minutes. Resources dispatched included:

  • An ambulance crew
  • An advanced paramedic
  • A fast response car
  • An incident response officer
  • A trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance

Independent Police Watchdog Begins Probe

In line with standard procedure following such incidents, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The IOPC has confirmed it has begun an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

The Met Police's own Directorate of Professional Standards was also notified. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson expressed sadness at the outcome and confirmed that officers would fully cooperate with the IOPC's enquiries.

Cordons remained in place at the location for some time as investigations commenced, with local traffic continuing to experience some disruption.
