Third arrest after fatal Kent hit-and-run kills man in 80s

A third suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Kent that claimed the life of a pedestrian in his 80s.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident occurred on the A289 Gads Hill in Gillingham on Monday, December 29. Kent Police reported that the elderly man was struck by a grey Mercedes and carried for a distance before the vehicle was abandoned. The victim's severely injured body was discovered on a side road, with the Mercedes located nearby.

Despite the efforts of South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics who treated him at the scene, the man later died from his injuries. The two occupants of the car are believed to have fled on foot immediately after the collision.

Police Investigation and Arrests

In the immediate aftermath, Kent Police arrested two men: a 29-year-old from Chatham and a 28-year-old man of no fixed address. The investigation progressed with the arrest of a third man, from the Edgware area of North London, on Tuesday, December 30. He remains in police custody.

Detectives from the serious collision investigation unit have released CCTV images showing two hooded figures in dark clothing, believed to be connected to the incident.

Ongoing Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Inspector Zoe Wilczek confirmed that while no further suspects are currently sought, the investigation is very much active. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

"We are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the vehicle or pedestrian prior to the collision, to contact us," said DI Wilczek. The force is also keen to obtain any dashcam or CCTV footage that may have captured the event or the vehicle's movements.
